Just a little bit about me, my name is Andrew. I’ve been in I.T. industry for over 15 years working in some capacity as either a Network Administrator or an I.T. Manager. I started my IT training learning Cisco routers and was even Cisco Certified with my CCNA designation. When I finished school and left the academic side and migrated into the business sector; one thing that I came to realize was that many small and medium companies were not using Cisco Routers. Since my exposure to Cisco hardware in the business field was zero; well as the saying goes, use it or lose it.
Over the years I’ve used CheckPoint, WatchGuard, Juniper, and SonicWall firewall routers, but nothing comes close to the simplicity of using pfSense. This is why I’m such an advocate.
My discovery of pfSense software came when I was looking for a robust but inexpensive (i.e. free) firewall to replace my totally inadequate home Linksys router but also providing VPN capabilities. After reading up on it online, I bought the book which was for version 1.2.3. Using the reading material I made the easy transition from a laughable home router to one that was categorized enterprise grade.
I’ve been using pfSense at home for over 7 years now. After I first started using it I realized how robust it was for business use; so I put it into action and I successfully implemented it into replacing expensive competing firewalls with relative ease.
